Caldeiras at eastern side of Furnas, east of Sao Miguel, Azores.
As you approach this area of Furnas, you notice that there is a strong smell of sulphur in the air. Not entirely pleasant, it has to be said. Once you get over this, it's amazing!
These caldeiros are hot springs, which bubble up from the ground, issuing forth clouds of steam. Even a little stream running through the village is literally boiling hot.
Here you can buy corn on the cob, cooked in the hot springs in large thick plastic sacks. Some rocks are so hot that the air shimmers with their heat. But don't think that this is all there is to Furnas: it's a delightful little town which is well worth dedicating a day to. Park your car (anywhere - it's not easy to find a carpark) and take a wander. There are plenty of cafes and restaurants and it is SO pretty! The parks are amazing. It was one of my favourite paces on the island. A beautiful village surrounded by spectacular mountains, with a fantastic beach close by (Ribeira Quiente). Perfect!
